Bio

Dr. Varma earned an undergraduate degree with highest honors from Harvard College, Cambridge, MA. He earned a medical degree from the University of California at San Diego School of Medicine. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at UCSD Medical Center. Over the next decade he served as an epidemic intelligence officer for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. During his tenure with the CDC he oversaw a collaborative tuberculosis prevention program between the U.S. and the Thailand Ministry of Public Health, and the International Emerging Infection Program in collaboration with China. Since 2011 he has served as the Deputy Commissioner for Disease Control for the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
